Across Canada: August 11 - 13, 2023 St. John's Nfld, Petty Harbour, Quidi Vidi, Cape Spear

11 Aug, Friday, 2023 - We arrived in St. John's early afternoon. Our camping spot was Pippy Park, a municipal campground near town. We didn't need water nor electricity, so camped in the overflow section. It was quiet, a grassy field surrounded by trees.
After setting up we went into St. John's, drove to Signal Hill and then walked along the North Head Trail down to the Battery and up staircases that clung to the rocky cliff edges.

12 Aug, Saturday, 2023 - We visited The Rooms - a very well put together museum that told many stories. In the afternoon we drove to Cape Spear, the easternmost point in North America. An old lighthouse was interesting, very different from our west coast lighthouses. The house was built around the stone lighthouse structure.

It was a glorious day and we walked along the cliff path, winds gusting very strong at times. The water colour and movement mesmerized us. Lots of Pitcher Plants, the provincial flower, dotted the grassy cliffs.

A short drive took us to Petty Harbour, the childhood home of Alan Doyle, the musician. We watched a quartet of fisherman fileting fish with rapid, sure movements and very sharp knives. They were extremely friendly and spoke with us for a long while.

All cod-fishing out of Petty Harbour is done by hand-lining, using the same methods the first immigrants used 400 years previously.

13 Aug, Sunday - Spent a relaxing morning at the campsite taking care of domestic things like laundry. In the afternoon we drove up to Signal Hill and visited the Cabot Tower from where Marconi sent and received his first transatlantic message wirelessly.

From there we walked the trail along the coast to Quidi Vidi, a small village with a very protected harbour. Gorgeous views. A hot day. We walked the Burma Road back to avoid some very long staircases.
