Trip Planning and Preparation

Last summer we took five weeks and drove from Victoria up to the Yukon, then into the Northwest Territories as far as Tuktoyaktuk, on the Arctic Ocean.

Fish Creek Wildlife Observation Centre - Haines, Alaska - 2022

We created several documents - a packing list and a preparation list, and are using that for this year's three-month trip to Newfoundland.

Here are some of the things on the preparation list:

* check trailer brakes and repack wheel bearings

* replace the backup camera in the TV

* Take TV to shop for a top to bottom check-up

* mount bike rack on rear bumper and verify trailer tongue weight is still adequate.

* Purchase small generator at Costco to allow AC while boondocking if we get caught in abnormally hot weather.

* Install tire pressure monitoring system on trailer

* Wash and wax trailer

As far as planning goes, we like to be spontaneous and don't have many reservations made ahead. The one exception is the Newfoundland ferry. We plan to take the 16 hour ferry from North Sydney, NS to Argentia, NL one way, and the shorter ferry back. We reserved the Argentia ferry several months ago and it's a good thing we did as reservations filled up quickly and we had to be flexible with our date. We reserved a cabin at the same time, as the ferry travels overnight.

We've done lots of reading, watched Youtube videos, and talked with others about what to see and what to do, but we've made no firm plans. It will be interesting to see how that works out. There are a few friends to visit along the way, as well.
