By the Shores of Lake Huron
We sped across the western provinces, intent on reaching Ontario. It was a bit of a surprise to me to cross the longitudinal meridian of Canada when we were in Manitoba. Halfway across Canada in four days was a bit of a marathon.
After leaving Abbotsford, we stopped for lunch at Yard Creek Provincial Park, between Sicamous and Revelstoke. It's a hidden place, with a beautiful picnic site beside the river.
The night was spent at Exshaw's municipal campground. We enjoyed a walk along the river after driving all day. We didn't unhook as we were off early the next morning.
Moose Jaw's Prairie Oasis Campground was our next stop. It's located just off the highway. The sites are close together, but again, we were there just for a place to spend the night. Showers were great.
The next night we spent with friends in Niverville, Manitoba.
In school geography class one thing every Canadian student learns is to draw the Canadian Shield, a wide band of rock around Hudson Bay. The TransCanada highway winds across and through rocks and lakes and trees that mark the landscape.
We stopped at Kakebeka Falls Provincial Park for a night of camping and a couple of hours of hiking. There were plenty of sites available, and we hadn't made reservations. Again, we didn't plug in. Our site was near the river and quiet. Viewing platforms allow close access to the falls. A short trail led to another, smaller, but equally beautiful waterfall. We enjoyed hiking the next morning and left around noon.
We camped at Neys Provincial Park for one night and walked on the sand by Lake Superior. We hadn't made reservations and it was fuller than the previous park. We ended up in the Area 4, furthest from the park entrance, and very quiet and private.
Then on to Blind River on a hot Sunday afternoon. We consulted IOverlander and found a lovely spot at the end of Jetty Road, where the commercial fish boats are moored. The breeze off the lake was a welcome reprieve from the heat and humidity.
We've spent the last few days with friends in Caledon East, and will head to Ottawa tomorrow.
